Evangelist Will Graham returned to Africa in July, preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ to 28,450 people at the Peace and Joy Celebration in Mukono, Uganda. The event was held July 22-24 at the Uganda Christian University Sports Grounds.
“Some of you here today are carrying burdens, guilt and shame. I want you to come and give it over to the Lord”, said Graham from the stage. “God has come to this ground in Uganda to embrace you, but you have to make the decision to come home to Him.”
At Graham’s invitation, a total of 1,395 people made a commitment to Jesus. An additional 1,356 responded for prayer and spiritual support.
Rain threatened to derail the outdoor event all three days, but wasn’t a factor until Sunday when a sweeping hail storm poured down as Graham was about to speak. Attendees held the plastic chairs over their heads as makeshift umbrellas, and the storm broke just in time for the message.
“The weather was a significant issue, but each day the rain held off. On the final day it stopped just long enough for me to step up and share”, said Graham. “It was beautiful to see the audience persevering through the storm to hear about the love and hope of Jesus.”
While in Uganda, Graham took the opportunity to survey and participate in a number of outreaches being conducted in the area by the international Christian relief organisation Samaritan’s Purse. His father, Franklin Graham, is president and CEO of both Samaritan’s Purse and the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.
Graham visited a village where Samaritan’s Purse is helping the poor and teaching methods for sustainable living. He also spent time at a refugee centre where Samaritan’s Purse is coordinating the delivery of food to people seeking help after escaping violent conflicts in South Sudan. Graham then attended a graduation ceremony for school children who had completed a Bible study called The Greatest Journey and participated in an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift distribution.
This was Graham’s first time preaching in Uganda, though he has held events in neighbouring countries in recent years. He preached in Tanzania, along Uganda’s southern border, last year. He has visited Kenya,
situated on Uganda’s eastern border, multiple times. In addition to Uganda, Graham has preached evangelistically in Arizona, Australia, Norway and China thus far in 2016, with events in Scotland and Canada still on his calendar for this year.
