“I serve as a volunteer because we have been called to make disciples and this is where I can do that.”

David is an Australian volunteer chat coach for BGEA’s Internet Evangelism ministry, Search for Jesus. Four months into David’s volunteering, he sat down one night to chat with a man who reached out through the evangelistic website. The man shared that he was looking for answers to a number of areas in his life, including loneliness, alcohol and drug dependency, and a lack of purpose. “We had a connection straightaway,” said David. “I told him I understood and that I had faced the same thing. Then I added that I only made progress after I invited Jesus into my life and trusted in Him.”

When David asked if he wanted to accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour, the man said yes. They prayed together as the man surrendered his life to the Lord.

“This has been a great encouragement to me to help someone become a disciple of Jesus,” said David. “He kept asking questions, he was excited for this new beginning.”

David is just one of hundreds of volunteers around the world. He was looking for an opportunity to evangelise in his local area when he heard about BGEA’s online ministry. “I’m disabled but serving here means that I can be in the world, taking Jesus to people,” he said. “It has been life-changing. It teaches you to be Christ-like by listening and putting others first,” he said.

“It’s amazing that we can build a strong community even though we’re miles apart,” he said. “This is a great way to extend the reach of BGEA’s ministry and I can do this anytime without leaving home.”

Each person reached through Search for Jesus has an opportunity to connect one on one with a trained volunteer through live chat. Volunteers, like David, are there to offer spiritual guidance, encouragement, prayer and above all, point people to the hope found in Jesus Christ.
